Professor-Harvard Medical School, Director-Bing Center for WM
Dana Farber Cancer Institute
Boston, Massachusetts
Dr. Treon is the Director of the Bing Center for Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Using whole-genome sequencing, Dr. Treon’s laboratory first identified highly recurring activating mutations in MYD88 and CXCR4 in WM patients and was the first to report that Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) was a downstream target of the MYD88 mutation, resulting in the development and approval of BTK-inhibitors for WM. Dr. Treon has also served as the Principal Investigator on studies that introduced many novel therapies for the treatment of WM. Prof. Treon's lab is currently focused on genomic studies aimed at identifying predisposition; genomic subtyping; and identification of novel, genomic based targets for WM treatment. By multi-omic studies, the Treon lab has defined three subsets of WM that show distinct genomic, transcriptomic and treatment outcomes. His laboratory has also developed highly potent bifunctional HCK/BTK and IRAK1/IRAK4 PROTACS aimed at blocking mutated MYD88 signaling. Prof. Treon has also published extensively on topics in WM and related disorders, with over 400 peer-reviewed original reports, reviews, editorials, and chapters in high-impact journals and textbooks. He has been the principal organizer of the biennial International Workshops on WM since 2000, and served as Chair of the 17th International Workshop on Multiple Myeloma in 2019 (Boston). He has mentored numerous physicians and scientists, many of whom are leaders in the WM and Multiple Myeloma field. In recognition of his scientific work in WM, Dr. Treon has received numerous honors including the Robert A. Kyle Award for Outstanding Contributions to Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia and the Jan Gosta Waldenstrom Award for Lifetime Achievements in WM. In 2017, Dr. Treon was elected a Fellow to the American College of Physician, and a Fellow to the Royal College of Physicians, London UK.
