Sungjae Kim, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. He received his BSc from Imperial College London and his PhD from the College of Medicine at Seoul National University, where he developed his research interest in genomics.
His research focuses on the early detection and evolution of plasma cell disorders, particularly monoclonal gammopathy of indeterminate potential (MGIP), a newly described precursor state to multiple myeloma. He combines high-sensitive mass spectrometry with single-cell multi-omics to investigate clonal dynamics and premalignant trajectories in large prospective cohorts.
Dr. Kim also investigates racial disparities in myeloma precursor states using multi-omics and genetic ancestry data. His recent work highlights the influence of African ancestry on the prevalence and biology of MGUS and MGIP.
His long-term goal is to further elucidate the biology of MGIP and its clinical significance, particularly in the context of ancestry-related disparities, and to advance precision medicine approaches for early detection and risk stratification in hematologic malignancies.
